[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Samsung Electronics held its first-ever online Unpacked event and unveiled new products including the 'Galaxy Note20.' The Galaxy Note20 transforms into a PC in your hand with a more powerful S Pen and note-taking features, and also doubles as a mobile console. In the 'Next Normal' era, it introduced the Galaxy ecosystem that freely connects PCs, tablets, and smartphones to support both work and leisure.
On the 5th, Samsung Electronics held 'Galaxy Unpacked 2020' online and unveiled ▲Galaxy Note20 ▲Galaxy Z Fold2 ▲Galaxy Tab S7 ▲Galaxy Watch3 ▲Galaxy Buds Live ▲Galaxy Watch3. The event was broadcast live worldwide from Korea.
Samsung Electronics' Mobile Communications Business President (CEO) No Tae-moon said, "Technology plays a more important role now than ever before," adding, "'Galaxy Note20' offers productivity like a computer and powerful performance like a game console. Together with smartwatches, earbuds, tablets, and more, it provides a stronger Galaxy experience to help consumers focus on what matters and enjoy a richer life."
'Galaxy Note20' Steps Up as a PC in Your Hand and Mobile Console
The Galaxy Note20 is available in Mystic Bronze, Gray, Blue, Red, and Pink. The Galaxy Note20 Ultra comes in three colors: Mystic Bronze, Black, and White.
The S Pen of the Galaxy Note20 responds faster, just like a real pen. For the Ultra model, the latency is 9ms, an 80% improvement over the previous generation. The 'Air Action' feature that recognizes S Pen movements has also evolved. Pressing the button and drawing a left bracket gesture goes back, while drawing a zigzag captures and allows writing. Commands can be customized according to desired gestures.
Along with the pen, the core 'Note' memo and document functions have been strengthened. During meetings or classes, voice can be recorded simultaneously, and crooked handwriting is straightened horizontally. PDF files can be imported and annotated with the S Pen. Notes created in Samsung Notes can be converted into PPT files. Editing documents in Samsung Notes automatically saves and syncs across devices with the same account, such as PCs and tablets. Wireless connection for 'Samsung DeX,' which allows using the smartphone like a desktop, is supported for the first time.
The Galaxy Note20 also transforms into a mobile console. Over 100 PC and console games available on Xbox can be enjoyed on the smartphone while on the move. This is possible by supporting the cloud gaming service 'Xbox Game Pass,' which streams games stored on servers to mobile devices. Microsoft plans to offer a 3-month free subscription to Galaxy Note20 buyers. Additionally, users can create shortcuts to run smartphone apps on Windows 10 PCs, and a 'multi-tasking' feature to run multiple apps simultaneously will be provided within the year. Samsung Notes and OneNote integration allows easy viewing of notes created on the Galaxy Note on PCs.
Pre-orders Start from the 7th... Camera and File Transfer Upgrades
The Galaxy Note20 will be released in two versions: standard (6.7 inches) and Ultra (6.9 inches). Pre-orders in Korea begin on the 7th, with official release on the 21st. Although prices were not disclosed on the day, they are expected to be 1,199,000 KRW and 1,452,000 KRW respectively. While previous Note series prices steadily increased, this year is expected to ease the price burden.
The Ultra model supports a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother screen transitions. It automatically adjusts the refresh rate depending on content to improve battery efficiency. The Galaxy Note20 is equipped with 'UWB (Ultra Wideband)' technology, which offers wider reach and precise location tracking compared to Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. It supports file sharing for multiple files at once. In the future, services using augmented reality technology to locate objects will also be provided.
Camera and video recording features have been further enhanced. The Ultra model is equipped with a triple camera including a 108-megapixel sensor, while the standard model includes a 64-megapixel sensor. Wireless earbuds like Galaxy Buds Live can be used as microphones, and microphone direction can be adjusted. Battery capacities are 4,300mAh and 4,500mAh respectively, supporting 25W fast charging that can charge up to 50% in 30 minutes.
Ambitious Tech-Driven Model 'Galaxy Z Fold2'
Galaxy Z Fold2 Mystic Bronze. Detailed specifications and release schedule to be announced in early September.
The Galaxy Z Fold2 is the third foldable phone and the successor to the Galaxy Fold. It combines the large screen of the Fold with the screen durability and hinge technology of the Z Flip. It boasts a larger 6.2-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch main screen, rivaling tablets. The Galaxy Z Fold2 will be available in two colors: Mystic Black and Bronze. Detailed specifications, release schedule, and pricing will be announced in early September. A premium package 'Galaxy Z Fold2 Thom Browne Edition,' created in collaboration with Thom Browne, will also be introduced.
Summarizing previously released information about the Galaxy Z Fold, the notch on the right side of the main screen has disappeared, and the front camera is embedded within the screen. Like the Galaxy Note20, the rear cameras are arranged vertically, featuring a triple rear camera setup (64MP, 12MP, 12MP) and a 10MP front camera. The domestic price is expected to be around 2.3 million KRW.
Work and Leisure Anywhere with 'Galaxy Tab S7'
The Galaxy Tab S7 Plus model features a 12.4-inch display and comes with the S Pen and Book Cover Keyboard sold separately.
The 'Galaxy Tab S7,' which combines the strengths of tablets and PCs with a large screen, also took the stage at Unpacked. It will be released in two models: an 11-inch standard and a 12.4-inch Plus. Like the Galaxy Note20 Ultra, it supports a 120Hz refresh rate and has improved S Pen writing feel. It can run three apps simultaneously, enhancing multitasking capabilities. It is equipped with a large-capacity battery (8,000mAh and 10,000mAh) and supports up to 45W fast charging. The Galaxy Tab S7 series will be available in three colors: Mystic Black, Silver, and Bronze. In Korea, pre-sales start on the 18th, with official release on September 3rd.
Several changes aimed at using the tablet for work are notable. The front camera position has been moved to allow horizontal video conferencing. A book cover keyboard with function keys arranged at the top like a PC keyboard is also separately provided. Pre-installed apps include 'Clip Studio Paint' for webtoon and illustration work, the note-taking app 'Noteshelf,' and the graphic design platform 'Canva.'
Noise Cancelling 'Galaxy Buds Live' & Wrist Doctor 'Galaxy Watch3'
The Galaxy Buds Live are the first in the Galaxy Buds series to feature active noise cancelling (ANC). These smart wireless earbuds block unnecessary noise while allowing important sounds like announcements to be heard. When two Buds Live are connected to the Galaxy Note20 or Galaxy Tab S7 series, the 'Buds Together' feature lets users listen to the same music. They are equipped with three microphones and a 12mm speaker, larger than the previous generation, improving sound and call quality. With ANC on, music playback lasts up to 21 hours. Available in Mystic Bronze, Black, and White, they will be released domestically on the 6th, priced at 198,000 KRW.
The Galaxy Watch3 offers health measurement, exercise, and sleep management. In addition to blood pressure and electrocardiogram measurements, it can now measure blood oxygen saturation, allowing users to check how effectively they are breathing. The watch face is larger and features a circular bezel but is lighter in weight. The titanium Galaxy Watch3 will be released within the year. It comes in two sizes, 41mm and 45mm; the 41mm is available in Mystic Silver and Bronze, and the 45mm in Silver and Black. Prices start at 495,000 KRW for the LTE model and 429,000 KRW for the Bluetooth model.
