More than 6 Deaths Per Day Due to Heavy Rain in Central Region... 919 Displaced Persons

At Least 12 Dead and 13 Missing Over Three Days
3,622 Hectares of Farmland Flooded, 6 Railway Lines Suspended

Due to continuous heavy rain for three days in the Seoul metropolitan area and central regions, at least six people died on the 3rd alone, resulting in consecutive casualties and property damage. The number of evacuees due to house flooding and landslides approached 1,000.


The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCH) announced that as of 7:30 PM on the 3rd, the casualties from the heavy rain over the three days from the 1st to the 3rd were tentatively counted as 12 dead and 13 missing.


In particular, following six deaths caused by heavy rain over two days from the 1st to the 2nd, at least six more people died on the 3rd alone. Three people died due to being buried by soil at a factory in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, and a family of three lost their lives in a pension burial accident in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province.


The number of missing persons, which was eight until the 2nd, increased by five on the 3rd alone. Among them, a man in his 50s who went missing while working in a manhole in Tangjeong-myeon, Asan-si, Chungnam, was swept away by the swollen rainwater on that day. Including one presumed missing person from the Gapyeong pension burial accident, the number of missing persons is expected to rise further.


The number of evacuees, which was in the 800s until the morning of that day, increased to 919. By region, there were 523 in Chungbuk, 353 in Gyeonggi, and 43 in Gangwon.

Among them, 175 people from 89 households have returned home, but 744 people from 502 households are still staying at emergency shelters such as relatives’ homes, gymnasiums, senior centers, and village halls.

The number of temporarily evacuated people was counted at 1,712. The Gyeonggi area had the highest number with 1,321, followed by 342 in Chungbuk and 49 in Gangwon.


A total of 2,431 facility damages were reported over the three days. Private facility damages accounted for 1,158 cases, and public facility damages were 1,273 cases. Housing damages such as flooding or soil outflow were 556 cases, with 456 cases of livestock barns and warehouses, and 146 cases of vinyl greenhouses.


Damage to farmland also reached 3,622 hectares. Of these, 2,527 hectares were flooded, and there were additional damages such as rice lodging (868 hectares), fruit drop (160 hectares), and burial (67 hectares).

Damage to public facilities including collapse, breakage, and flooding consisted of 668 cases on roads and bridges, 305 cases on railways, 200 landslides, 87 river damages, and 13 reservoir damages.


Among the facility damages, emergency repairs have been completed for 1,344 cases, accounting for 55.3%. Emergency repairs were completed at 17 railway sites including the Yeongdong Line, 3 reservoirs, and 7 roads.


Road and railway controls have also expanded. Sixty-five roads were blocked in Seoul, Chungbuk, and Gyeonggi, and six railway lines including the Chungbuk Line, Taebaek Line, Jungang Line, Yeongdong Line, Gyeonggang Line, and Hambak Line are not operating. Additionally, 252 hiking trails in 10 national parks such as Bukhansan, Taebaeksan, and Songnisan, 16 frequently flooded underground passages in Gyeonggi, Chungbuk, and Gyeongbuk regions, and 85 riverside parking lots in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Gangwon, and Chungbuk are also under control.
