[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Yeon-ju] Ko Yu-min (25), who played for the women's professional volleyball team Hyundai Engineering & Construction, was found dead at her home, and it is known that she had been suffering from malicious comments during her lifetime.
The Gwangju Police Department in Gyeonggi announced on the 1st that Ko Yu-min was found dead at her home in Opo-eup, Gwangju City, at around 9:40 p.m. on the 31st of last month. The police, considering the absence of signs of intrusion or criminal suspicion, believe that Ko Yu-min made an extreme choice and plan to investigate the cause of death.
Ko Yu-min was drafted in the first round as the 4th pick in the 2013 professional volleyball rookie draft and had played exclusively for Hyundai Engineering & Construction. She played as a backup left, a position requiring strong defensive skills, and before last season, she signed a free agent (FA) contract with the team, gaining recognition for her utility.
Ko Yu-min appeared in 25 games this season but reportedly left the team in early March before the season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and did not return. Despite the club's persuasion, she did not come back and was reportedly processed as a voluntary withdrawal in May.
In May, Ko Yu-min shared on her social network service (SNS), "There is a reason for my actions, but I thought there was no benefit in explaining them," and added, "Please do not send unsolicited advice if you are not my fan. You also contributed to this. I hope you focus on your own matters," expressing her distress over malicious comments and hostile direct messages (DMs).
Ko Yu-min had been communicating with fans by sharing her daily life on SNS until recently.
