SCMP "Samsung Electronics Halts PC Production at Suzhou Plant in China"

[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] Samsung Electronics is reportedly set to halt PC production at its Suzhou computer factory in Jiangsu Province, China.

According to Hong Kong media South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 1st, Samsung Electronics will stop PC assembly and production at the Suzhou plant and focus on research and development (R&D). As a result, about half of the approximately 1,700 employees as of the end of last year are expected to be affected.

SCMP reported that Samsung Electronics recently sent a notice regarding this to its employees, and both Samsung Electronics and Suzhou government officials have confirmed the matter.

The Suzhou plant was established in 2002, shortly after China joined the World Trade Organization (WTO), and since 2005, it has operated as Samsung Electronics' only overseas computer manufacturing facility.

SCMP evaluated that Samsung Electronics' organizational restructuring in China reflects the rapid disappearance of China's advantages as a manufacturing base due to rising labor costs and the US-China trade war.
