[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The ‘2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo’ has been recognized as an international event.
According to Jeonnam Province on the 29th, the ‘2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo’ was finally approved as an international event by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance’s International Event Review Committee on the same day.
After the joint hosting agreement between Jeonnam Province and Suncheon City in January, the garden expo gained momentum for the event’s organization and officially requested approval as an international event from the Ministry of Strategy and Finance.
Following the approval to host the international garden expo at the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) General Assembly held in Miami, USA, in March, it is a great achievement to have also received government approval as an international event.
Jeonnam Province and Suncheon City thoroughly prepared the necessity and justification for the 2023 expo, including the know-how from the successful hosting of the 2013 Suncheonman International Garden Expo, active cooperation from the International Association of Horticultural Producers, and the ambition to become a hub for Northeast Asian garden culture industry, which led to positive results in the feasibility study.
The expo will be held for six months from April 22 to October 22, 2023, centered around Suncheonman National Garden and throughout the entire urban area.
Unlike the previous garden expo which only created gardens within the expo site, the 2023 expo plans to develop gardens across the entire Suncheon area, including Suncheonman National Garden, the coast, Dongcheon, and the urban area.
With five strategies including forest gardens, village gardens, wetland gardens, coastal gardens, and renewal of the national garden, this expo is expected to have an economic ripple effect of about 1.5 trillion won, create 20,000 quality new jobs, and attract 8 million visitors, becoming a major cornerstone for Jeonnam’s Blue Economy and the national Green New Deal realization.
With the final approval of the garden expo as an international event, the province plans to steadily prepare for successful hosting by establishing an organizing committee and securing national budget.
Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, said, “With the wishes of 2 million residents, we have achieved the great feat of hosting the 2023 International Garden Expo again in Jeonnam following 2013,” and added, “We will make it a world-class festival that can stand shoulder to shoulder with the UK Chelsea Flower Show and the France Chaumont International Garden Festival.”
