[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Emart24 will introduce port wine in August.
The newly launched Sheffield Tony Port (750ml) is a cost-effective wine from the American company Gallo, boasting quality comparable to Portuguese and Spanish port wines, priced at 15,000 KRW. Emart24 decided to offer port wine to satisfy the diverse and segmented preferences of customers who enjoy wine at convenience stores.
Port wine is made by adding brandy to fermenting wine, resulting in an alcohol content of 18-20%, which is higher than regular wine. This wine, characterized by its rich and smooth sweetness, pairs well with desserts such as cheese and chocolate. It can be boiled and used as a steak sauce, and due to its high alcohol content, it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one month.
To celebrate the launch of Sheffield Tony Port, Emart24 will run a promotion throughout August, giving customers who purchase wine a chocolate (Digestive Ball) that pairs well with port wine.
Following last month, discount events offering wine at reasonable prices will continue. First, two types of wine, Roche Mazet Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, known as France's national wines, have been selected as wines of the month and will be sold at a special price of 9,900 KRW throughout August. Discounts will also be applied to a total of 90 types of wine, including 16 mini wines at 3 for 9,900 KRW and 29 types of red and white wines at 2 for 20,000 KRW.
Meanwhile, Emart24's liquor specialty stores surpassed 2,000 outlets in July this year, just 1 year and 5 months after launching. Currently, they operate a total of about 230 types of various liquors, including around 150 types of wine and 70 types of whiskey. Thanks to the expansion of liquor specialty stores, wine sales in the first half of 2020 increased by 215% compared to the same period last year.
Son Areum, Emart24's liquor buyer, said, "As the number of people in their 20s and 30s with overseas travel experience to Spain and Portugal increases, the number of customers enjoying port wine domestically is also growing," adding, "We recommend port wine not only to its enthusiasts but also to customers who want to enjoy a unique wine besides red and white wines."
