SH Youth Architect Design Competition, 'Space Streaming' and 'Guronori Shopping Center' Win Grand Prize

[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation (SH Corporation) announced on the 27th that the work "Space Factory Delivering Space: Space Streaming" by Hyun Seon-yong, Yang Ji-won, and Jung Hyun-woo from Soongsil University won the grand prize in the studio category, and the work "Guro Nori Shopping Center" by Ahn Seong-woo, Ahn Da-hye, Kim Tae-hyun, and Jo Young-ho from Yonsei University won the grand prize in the general category at the 6th SH Young Architects Design Competition.

This competition was held under the theme "Space Welfare Model Utilizing Architectural Assets" to find models that supply the lacking living SOC in the region by utilizing major architectural assets that form regional identity and contribute to regional regeneration. A total of 288 university (graduate) students from 10 universities in the studio category, 43 universities in the general category, and 10 companies participated, submitting 134 works.

SH Corporation announced that on the 24th, an award ceremony was held for 2 grand prize works, 2 excellence awards, and 10 encouragement awards. Prize money totaling 28 million KRW was also awarded, including 5 million KRW for each grand prize. In addition to the prize money, all winners will be given a separate collection of works and opportunities for online exhibitions.

Following last year, winners of the grand prize, excellence award, and encouragement award this year will also be given the special opportunity to participate in the "SH Young Architects-led Space Welfare Project," where they can directly plan and create spaces to operate as community-based facilities.

The judges commented, "Although it was a competition that required consideration of the somewhat difficult themes of architectural assets and space welfare simultaneously, it was interesting that the scope of architectural assets was expanded to include industrial heritage from the modernization process, transportation infrastructure, and urban infrastructure, and that creative utilization was attempted in their own unique ways."

Kim Se-yong, President of SH Corporation, stated, "I hope this competition serves as an opportunity to focus on the value of old spaces and to continuously pay attention to the functions of spaces for local communities."

Meanwhile, the winning works will be exhibited online through SH Corporation's promotional channels such as the YouTube channel (Cheongsinho TV) and Facebook. Detailed information about the works and winners can also be found on the SH Corporation Urban Research Institute website.
