[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] The second trial court has decided to summon Park Ju-shin, the son of the late Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon, to testify next month in the case where Yang Seung-oh, chief of the Nuclear Medicine Department at the Southeastern Regional Radiation Medical Center (Ph.D.), and others were indicted on suspicion of raising allegations of Park Ju-shin's military service corruption for election purposes.
According to the court on the 23rd, the Seoul High Court Criminal Division 6 (Presiding Judge Oh Seok-jun, Lee Jung-hwan, Jeong Soo-jin) accepted Dr. Yang's request and scheduled the witness examination for Park Ju-shin on the 26th of next month.
Earlier, Dr. Yang's side submitted an application to the court for the designation of a witness examination date and physical examination date, stating, "Since Park Ju-shin will return abroad after attending his father's funeral, the witness examination and physical examination must be conducted before his departure, so please promptly designate the dates for the witness examination and physical examination."
Park Ju-shin enlisted in the Air Force training camp in August 2011 but returned home in September of the same year due to thigh pain. Later, after a re-examination, it was revealed that he was classified as eligible for public service duty due to a herniated disc, which led to suspicions of military service corruption.
The suspicion was settled when Park publicly underwent an MRI scan at Severance Hospital in February 2012. However, some continued to claim that the MRI during the public physical examination was swapped.
When Dr. Yang and others made such claims, the prosecution viewed their purpose as trying to defeat Mayor Park in the local elections and indicted Dr. Yang and others in 2014 for violating the Public Official Election Act.
The first trial court judged that the public physical examination video of Park was clearly taken by himself and found Dr. Yang and others guilty, sentencing each to fines ranging from 7 million to 15 million won.
