[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Choi Hyun-joo] Changwon City in Gyeongnam announced on the 23rd that two public officials were selected as commendation recipients for their contributions to the development of population policies in preparation for low birth rates and aging populations, receiving awards from the government and Gyeongnam Province on the occasion of the ‘9th Population Day.’

‘Population Day,’ now in its 9th year, is a national commemorative day established in August 2011 to raise public awareness of the political, economic, and social adverse effects caused by population structure imbalance and to actively respond to low birth rates and aging populations.

For government awards, Park Kyung-ok, a senior official from the Elderly and Disabled Division, received a commendation from the Minister of Health and Welfare, and for Gyeongnam Province awards, Jo Yang-hee, a senior official from the New Growth Industry Division, received the Governor’s Award.

As of the end of last month, the city’s population stood at 1,040,118. To overcome population decline, Changwon City is promoting key tasks for 2020, including strengthening responses to employment, housing, and education issues, specializing in low birth rate and childcare measures, and realizing the resident population, focusing all administrative efforts on increasing birth rates and attracting population inflow.

An Byeong-o, Director of Planning and Budget Office of Changwon City, stated, “The population cliff and low birth rate issues are becoming serious across society. Although population policies are challenging as they do not yield immediate results, we will do our best to respond to low birth rates and aging populations through discovering and improving various policies and to create a city where everyone wants to live.”
