[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daeseop] #Travel agency Arts & Travel is overcoming the crisis in the travel industry caused by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic by launching an online lecture series called 'Virtual World Travel.' Although participants do not actually travel, the program provides diverse and entertaining content about travel destinations through online video conferencing, delivering a vivid experience as if the instructor and students are traveling together. Each class consistently attracts around 50 applicants.
#Employment-focused YouTube channel 'Inssa Damdangja' has about 170,000 subscribers. Intensive coaching lectures lasting 3 to 5 hours, which are difficult to offer on YouTube, have been conducted as offline classes with a capacity of 200 participants. However, many job seekers were unable to attend due to time and location constraints. To address this, offline lectures are now also offered live through a knowledge-sharing platform, enabling more job seekers to participate. Thanks to advantages such as real-time video and chat interaction, the number of participants has tripled compared to offline classes.
The common factor in these cases is the use of 'Happy College,' a knowledge-sharing platform operated by Hunet, a company specializing in corporate and lifelong education. Since its launch in April last year, Happy College has established itself as an online knowledge store with 1,190 instructors (masters), 2,180 pieces of content, and a cumulative total of 25,000 students.
On the 21st, Hunet held a 'Happy College' press conference at the Kensington Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul, where it announced these success stories and operational achievements. Cho Youngtak, CEO of Hunet, stated, "With edutech, traditional universities are being dismantled, and an era of 'a university in your hand' has opened where knowledge and information can be accessed anytime and anywhere. Through the Happy College platform, we plan to achieve digital transformation in education and lead the popularization of edutech."
Happy College allows knowledge producers to easily commercialize and sell their knowledge content, generating revenue, similar to Naver's Smart Store. Instructors can open lectures on Happy College and provide students with an 'internet file address (URL),' enabling classes to proceed immediately without installing additional programs. Online and live lectures can also be resold as 'video on demand (VOD)' when needed.
Knowledge producers can create their own personal homepage-style one-person university page via the Happy College mobile app or website and register content. Various types of classes, including online and live lectures, can be opened. Additionally, community services that enable networking with students are provided, and corporate lecture connections are also possible.
Happy College allows masters to set their own content prices and expect revenue generation through royalties. Currently, lecture prices registered on Happy College range from free to 1.98 million KRW. According to Hunet, some lectures have achieved a highest single live session revenue of 25 million KRW and annual sales of 80 million KRW. Revenue from content sales is shared between Happy College and the masters at a certain ratio.
Hunet's survey on the composition of masters found that 'professional instructors' accounted for the largest share at 25%. This was followed by 'office workers' (22%), 'authors' (17%), 'educational institutions' (15%), and 'YouTubers' (13%). By content category, 'business and job skills' accounted for 25%, 'financial technology and side jobs' 17%, 'foreign languages' 15%, 'jobs and startups' 10%, and 'travel' 5%.
CEO Cho Youngtak emphasized, "Starting with Happy College's online knowledge store, anyone can easily commercialize their knowledge and experience and receive appropriate value for it." He added, "We aim to create a platform for knowledge supply that delivers specific and practical knowledge beyond universal knowledge, playing a social role. Just as Hunet's mission is 'to change people and the world through education,' we will build a new knowledge business platform through Happy College that can change the world."
