[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] A public opinion poll revealed that the American public trusts Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden's response to the COVID-19 pandemic more than that of U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to a joint survey released on the 19th (local time) by ABC News and the daily Washington Post (WP), 54% of respondents trusted former Vice President Biden's COVID-19 response, which was 20 percentage points higher than the 34% who preferred President Trump. This marks a complete reversal in support compared to the same survey conducted about four months ago.
Previously, in a poll conducted on March 25 by ABC and WP, 45% of respondents trusted President Trump's COVID-19 response, slightly ahead of the 43% who trusted former Vice President Biden.
Former Vice President Biden also led President Trump in support regarding crime and public safety as well as race relations, recording approval ratings of 50% and 58%, respectively, surpassing Trump by 9 and 25 percentage points.
In the economic sector, where President Trump had previously held a relative advantage, former Vice President Biden narrowed the support gap from 8 percentage points to 2 percentage points in about three months. President Trump's economic approval rating decreased from 50% on March 25 to 47% as of July 15, while Biden's rose from 42% to 45% during the same period.
When asked, "If the U.S. presidential election were held today, who would you vote for between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Joe Biden?" overall support showed former Vice President Biden leading with 54%, ahead of President Trump’s 39% by a 15 percentage point margin.
The survey was conducted via landline and mobile phone from July 12 to 15 with 1,006 adults, and the margin of error is ±3.5%.
