Gwangju World Swimming Championships Organizing Committee Marks the End of a '4 Years and 2 Months Journey'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Organizing Committee for the 2019 Gwangju World Swimming Championships is coming to the end of its 4 years and 2 months journey.

The Gwangju Swimming Championships Organizing Committee announced on the 16th that it held the 20th Executive Committee and General Assembly from the 6th to the 15th and decided to officially disband on the 31st of this month.

Starting next month, the committee will operate as a liquidation corporation, appointing Cho Young-taek, the current Secretary General of the Organizing Committee, as the liquidator to continue the liquidation work. The office will be rented and used on the first floor of Yeomju Gymnasium.

When the committee officially disbands at the end of this month, it will conclude its 4 years and 2 months journey since the inaugural general meeting on May 19, 2016.

This is more than 3 years faster than other international events such as the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics (7 years and 5 months) and the Incheon Asian Games (7 years and 6 months).

The committee has smoothly proceeded with remaining tasks through two organizational restructurings after the event, with the Secretary General and about 10 staff members handling ▲restoration of event facilities ▲production of the comprehensive event white paper ▲awarding of contributors ▲settlement of event operating expenses ▲closure of affairs with the International Swimming Federation (FINA) ▲transfer of event records.

In particular, the committee has completely closed its administrative relationship with the International Swimming Federation (FINA). Last year, it settled airfare and accommodation costs for overseas participating teams and submitted results of doping tests and event support such as competition operations.

On the 8th, in accordance with obligations specified in the agreement with FINA, the committee sent the final English results report on event operations to the FINA headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Additionally, records documenting the preparation and operation of the event from September 2016 to 2020 will be sequentially transferred to the National Archives by the end of the year for safe preservation and utilization as an international event record heritage.

Meanwhile, Cornel Marculescu, Secretary General of FINA, sent a letter to the committee on the 6th expressing gratitude for the dedicated efforts of the host, stating, "The success of the event was thanks to the government, Gwangju City, Gwangju citizens, and the Organizing Committee, and I am confident that the Gwangju event will become a model for future swimming competitions."
