Shinan 'Cheonsa Bridge' Wins 2020 Korea Land Grand Prize Presidential Award Cheonsa Bridge, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do

[Asia Economy Reporter Chunhee Lee] The "Cheonsa Bridge," connecting Amtae-myeon and Aphae-eup in Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, was honored with the Presidential Award at the "2020 Korea Land Grand Prize." The urban regeneration project by Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation (SH Corporation), "The Semi-basement Created by Youth (Shared Space)," received the Prime Minister's Award.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 16th that it selected a total of 25 outstanding works as winners of this year's Land Grand Prize, including one Grand Prize (Presidential Award), one Prime Minister's Award, and nine Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Awards.

The Land Grand Prize is the largest and most prestigious domestic event in the field of landscape, aimed at discovering and promoting creative landscape and design cases in Korea's land and urban spaces. Since 2009, it has been jointly hosted annually by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements.

This year, the Land Grand Prize called for submissions from April to May in nine categories: six general categories including natural landscape and public design, two landscape administration categories, and one special category (urban administration). As a result, a record-high 123 works were submitted over the past three years, demonstrating strong interest and enthusiasm. Subsequently, a judging panel composed of seven academic societies including the Architectural Institute of Korea and the Korean Society of Civil Engineers, along with the Architecture and Urban Space Research Institute, conducted document and on-site evaluations to select 25 outstanding works.

The Cheonsa Bridge, which won the Grand Prize (Presidential Award), is a bridge connecting the island areas of Sinan-gun, consisting of 1,004 islands. It is the world's longest high-low tower cable-stayed bridge with a main span length of 510 meters, and the first in the world to introduce a cable anchorage method at the FCM main girder. It received high praise for creating a new regional landscape representing the west coast by harmonizing with the surrounding islands' scenery.

The Prime Minister's Award-winning project, SH Corporation's "The Semi-basement Created by Youth (Shared Space)," led by young architects, transformed six long-abandoned semi-basement rental houses into a youth co-working space, shared kitchen, indoor gardening, and more, presenting a new model for community revitalization and receiving high evaluation.

Additionally, nine works received the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award across various categories, including ▲ Korea Land and Housing Corporation's "The Glorious Revival of Chimagolcheon" (Natural Landscape) ▲ Shindonga Construction's "Sejong 4-1 Living Zone Castle & Famille Diart" (Residential, Commercial, and Business Complex) ▲ Daegu Nam-gu's "Theme Street of Icheon-dong Filled with Village Stories" (Streets and Squares) ▲ Design Camp Moon Park DMP's "Namsa Library" (Public and Cultural Architecture) ▲ Seoul Seodaemun-gu's "Shinchon, Construction and Operation of Parang Whale" (Utilization of Idle Spaces for Urban Regeneration) ▲ Miryang-si, Gyeongnam's "Public Design Improvement Project around the Government Office" (Public Design), among others.

On the morning of the 16th at 9 a.m., the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport held an awards ceremony at the Korea Institute of Architects Hall in Seocho-gu, Seoul, attended by about 150 people including winners from each field, Second Vice Minister Myungsoo Son, and related experts.

Kim Sang-moon, Director of the Architecture Policy Division at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, "This year's Land Grand Prize received the highest number of submissions and the winners were selected through fierce competition, so this year's awardees can be regarded as the best landscape and design cases in Korea. We hope that these top works will continue to be discovered through the Land Grand Prize and disseminated nationwide."
