[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hong Jaehee] Iksan City, Jeonbuk Province, is establishing a monitoring system for farms generating complaints due to livestock odor and operating a permanent monitoring team to intensify odor management during the summer season.

According to the city on the 15th, since last year, declared as the inaugural year for reducing livestock odor, the project has been promoted with a budget of 8 billion KRW, resulting in a 57% decrease in livestock odor complaints compared to the same month last year (26 cases → 11 cases). This is evaluated as an outcome of combining real-time management systems with strong crackdowns.

The city has completed environmental improvements by installing odor reduction devices at large-scale facilities with chronic complaints such as the ‘Livestock Cooperative Livestock Resource Recycling Center’ and the ‘Ujuwon Joint Resource Recycling Facility,’ and by sealing the ‘Sangjiwon Livestock Manure Joint Treatment Plant,’ thereby dramatically resolving livestock odor issues in the northern region.

Furthermore, livestock farmers participating in the odor reduction project since last year have achieved a dual benefit as productivity increased due to reduced mortality rates and shortened shipping days through improvements in barn environments.

This year, to proactively respond to livestock odor during the summer heatwave, 100 tons of odor reduction agents were supplied to 278 livestock farms, and 36 odor reduction facilities were installed inside and outside barns and manure treatment facilities.

Additionally, odor measurement ICT equipment was installed at 20 farms that completed odor reduction facilities, establishing a system linked with the Livestock Environment Management Institute’s Odor Control Center, enabling farms to manage barn odors in real time by themselves.

For farms with chronic complaints, unmanned automatic odor collectors were installed to allow 24-hour monitoring, and a triple monitoring system has been established, including the creation of odor maps to understand odor concentration dispersion and year-round operation of the permanent odor monitoring team, ensuring thorough management.

Moreover, the city is implementing strong administrative regulations alongside support for reduction facilities. Farms where livestock odor continuously occurs are designated as odor reporting facilities and subjected to strong administrative measures such as facility improvement orders or suspension of operations.

From January to the present, odor collection crackdowns have been conducted on 45 farms, and administrative actions were taken against six farms exceeding standards (one improvement order, five improvement recommendations).

Mayor Jeong Heon-yul stated, “We are gradually achieving results by providing facility support to farms and enforcing strong crackdowns to reduce livestock odor. This year, we will also strengthen odor crackdowns to minimize livestock odor and reduce inconvenience to citizens in preparation for the heatwave.”
