[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Yeon-ju] A man in his 50s who repeatedly sexually assaulted his young stepdaughter over five years has been sentenced to a heavy prison term.
The Jeju District Court's 2nd Criminal Division (Chief Judge Jang Chan-su) announced on the 14th that A (52), who was indicted on charges of rape within a family relationship, was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
He was also ordered to complete a 40-hour sexual violence treatment program and was banned from working in child and youth-related institutions for five years.
The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "The nature of the crime is extremely bad and the blameworthiness is very high," and "The defendant is making incomprehensible excuses, raising doubts about whether he shows sincere remorse or regret."
A was charged with repeatedly molesting or sexually assaulting his stepdaughter B from 2015, when she was in elementary school, until January of this year.
Additionally, A is accused of threatening B with a weapon when she tried to stop a quarrel between him and his wife.
It is known that A denied the charges during the trial.
B reportedly suffered long-term distress, living with reversed day and night schedules due to fear of her father.
