California Shuts Down Bar Operations... LA Continues Online Classes in Fall

[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] Gavin Newsom, Governor of California, has ordered the closure of all bars in the state as the resurgence of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) continues. The Los Angeles Unified School District has decided to continue online classes for the fall semester.

According to CNN on the 13th (local time), Governor Newsom issued an executive order directing all counties in the state to suspend dine-in services at restaurants. Indoor operations of bars, wineries, theaters, amusement parks, and museums will also be halted. However, outdoor operations are permitted.

The Los Angeles Unified School District, which is part of California, announced on the same day that fall semester classes will be conducted online. The Los Angeles Unified School District is the second largest school district in the United States after the New York City Department of Education. In line with Los Angeles, the nearby San Diego Unified School District also decided not to hold in-person classes for the fall semester. This decision has attracted attention as it comes amid the Trump administration's active push for reopening schools in the fall semester.

In a joint statement released on the same day, the two school districts said they would consider returning to in-person classes for the next academic year if public health conditions permit.

The number of COVID-19 cases in California has reached 326,000. Although it is the second highest in the United States after New York, considering the recent surge in infections, California is likely to surpass New York and emerge as the state with the highest number of infections.
