[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jaehee] As the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) intensifies in India, the number of new confirmed cases reached 28,701 on the 13th. The cumulative number of confirmed cases stands at 878,254.


Thus, the daily new confirmed cases have continued to set record highs for five consecutive days since 24,879 on the 9th. The increase in confirmed cases over the five days amounts to 135,837.


The cumulative death toll rose by 500 from the previous day to 23,174.


Among major cities, New Delhi recorded the highest number of confirmed cases, with a cumulative total of 112,494. This is an increase of 1,573 from the previous day. However, the rate of increase has somewhat slowed.


On the other hand, confirmed cases in other major cities and rural areas such as Chennai, Bengaluru, and Pune are rapidly increasing.


In particular, the cumulative confirmed cases in Tamil Nadu, located in the south and including Chennai, reached 138,470 on this day, with 4,244 new cases reported in a single day.


Accordingly, some states including Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha have temporarily reintroduced strengthened lockdown measures.
