The Jeju District Court's 2nd Criminal Division (Chief Judge Jang Chansu) announced on the 13th that A (46), who was charged with assault causing death, was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 2-year suspension.
The court stated, "The defendant's assault resulted in a serious outcome leading to the victim's death," but added, "The defendant struck the victim once impulsively during an argument, and the unintended fatal result occurred in the process. The defendant has shown remorse, and the victim's father and brother, who are the bereaved family, do not wish for the defendant to be punished," explaining the sentencing rationale.
A is accused of fatally striking his wife B's face in front of a building in Seogwipo City, Jeju Island, at around 9:35 p.m. last November.
At the time, the couple had a verbal dispute while returning home after dining out, and A was found to have impulsively thrown a single punch at his wife.
B, who was assaulted in the facial area, suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and received treatment at a hospital but ultimately passed away on November 20.
