Closing of the 1st Discussion on Mid- to Long-Term Measures for Spent Nuclear Fuel

[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The Spent Nuclear Fuel Management Policy Review Committee announced that it completed the 1st comprehensive discussion meeting of the citizen participation group on the mid- to long-term management plan for spent nuclear fuel on the 12th.


The 1st discussion meeting was held over three days from the 10th to the 12th.


The meeting was conducted as online remote video conferences in 52 subcommittees across 13 regions nationwide.


The citizen participation group took part in all deliberation processes, including online presentations, panel discussions, and subcommittee discussions.


Participants included figures from the science and technology sector as well as civil society.


They engaged in objective expert presentations and heated panel discussions on topics such as spent nuclear fuel management principles and management scenarios.


The videos of presentations and discussions from the 1st meeting will be released on the Review Committee’s website this week.


However, videos and discussion contents involving the citizen participation group will not be disclosed to protect personal information, exclude inappropriate influences during the deliberation process, and ensure fairness.


Kim Soyoung, Chairperson of the Review Committee, stated, "Next month, we plan to hold the 2nd comprehensive discussion meeting regarding the policy decision system for spent nuclear fuel management plans and site selection procedures. In addition to the citizen participation public opinion survey, we will prepare a socially acceptable spent nuclear fuel policy through future generation workshops, public TV debates, and general public surveys."
