Song Ah-ryang, the Democratic Party's Deputy Spokesperson of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, released the statement, saying that the council cannot contain its grief over Mayor Park's tragic choice. The Democratic Party of the Seoul Metropolitan Council urged active response to the COVID-19 crisis to ensure that the late mayor’s mission for Seoul’s administration is not disrupted and requested the continued promotion of Seoul’s key projects.

Mayor Park Won-soon of Seoul passed away on July 9 at the age of 64.
As a human rights lawyer and civic activist who always stood on the side of the underprivileged, and as an administrator who spent the longest time with the capital city Seoul, we cannot help but feel deep sorrow over Mayor Park Won-soon’s tragic decision.
The various policies he implemented for the development of Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea, brought about remarkable progress for the city. His conviction in responding to national crises such as infectious disease outbreaks greatly contributed to protecting the safety of our citizens.
Though his tragic decision leaves us in shock, with his gentle yet strong character (外柔內剛), the Democratic Party of the Seoul Metropolitan Council urges active response to the COVID-19 situation to ensure that the late mayor’s mission for Seoul’s administration is not hindered and to continue promoting Seoul’s key projects. Furthermore, by strengthening the bond between the council and the executive branch and actively cooperating to resolve the situation, we will minimize administrative gaps and strive to fully protect the safety of Seoul’s citizens.
Once again, we respectfully pray for the repose of the deceased and express our deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
