[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] Lotte Museum will hold the exhibition "Jean-Michel Basquiat: Streets, Heroes, Art" from October 8th this year to February 7th next year.
Basquiat appeared like a comet in the early 1980s New York art scene and left behind over 3,000 works during a short period of 8 years until his death at the young age of 28. Through new artworks filled with the energy of freedom and resistance, he opened a new horizon in contemporary visual culture and remains a global favorite as a symbol of youth and a source of new inspiration.
At the 2017 New York Sotheby's auction, Basquiat's 1982 painting "Untitled" was sold for $115.0 million (approximately 138 billion KRW), setting the record for the highest price for an American artist.
This exhibition, the largest Basquiat exhibition ever held in Korea, will display about 150 of his precious works.
Lotte Museum highlights Basquiat's innovative artistic world through three keywords: "Street," "Art," and "Hero." The exhibition will feature paintings, sculptures, drawings, and ceramic works that comprehensively explore his artistic world, from the SAMO period that began on the streets of New York, to new forms of popular culture and industrialization appearing in his art, and various icons he created inspired by heroes. A large-scale work created in collaboration with Andy Warhol will also be exhibited.
Before the exhibition opens, early bird tickets will be sold at a 40% discount on Naver and Melon Ticket reservation sites from July 10th until October 7th, the day before the opening.
