[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The most-watched movie on LG Uplus's IPTV platform U+tv in the first half of this year was "Parasite."

On the 10th, LG Uplus announced the VOD movie purchase rankings for the first half of the year and created a "First Half Year Review Special" featuring popular content from the period.

Analyzing VOD purchase counts from January 1 to June 30, "Parasite," which won four Academy Awards, took first place. Following were "Frozen 2," the first animated film whose both the first and second installments surpassed 10 million viewers, and "Baekdusan," which surpassed 8.2 million viewers.

Due to the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), there were few blockbuster releases in theaters, so movies that were popular last year occupied the top ranks.

The 2011 film "Contagion" rose to 8th place as word of mouth spread due to its storyline similar to the COVID-19 situation. "Trolls World Tour," which was unusually released simultaneously in theaters and on IPTV VOD to prevent the spread of COVID-19, ranked 10th among foreign films. Although it attracted only 150,000 viewers in theaters, it received great acclaim in the VOD market.

An LG Uplus official said, "Among the new releases that started VOD service in May and June, Korean film hopefuls such as 'Innocence,' which surpassed 800,000 cumulative viewers, and 'Intruder,' which recorded 530,000 viewers, are expected to achieve good results as they bring vitality to the stagnant theater industry by starting VOD services one after another."
