[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Choi Hyun-joo] Changwon City in Gyeongnam announced on the 9th that the Wolyeong-dong site (57,144㎡) within the Masanhappo-gu cultural district urban regeneration New Deal project area has been selected as a target area for the residential environment improvement project by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH).
The residential environment improvement project is a public maintenance project aimed at improving deteriorated and poor residential environments within the city. Its purpose is to enhance the residential environment in areas where low-income residents live in clusters, infrastructure is poor, or old houses are excessively concentrated.
The selected area is included in the cultural district of the urban regeneration strategic plan, which is the basic plan of the urban regeneration project, and is an old residential area adjacent to Gyeongnam National University, significantly affecting students' living conditions.
The city judged that residential environment improvement was urgent and conducted related investigations.
Based on the collected data, the city applied in May to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and LH for the ‘Urban Regeneration New Deal-linked Residential Environment Improvement Project.’
According to the city, regarding the cultural district housing redevelopment project near the selected site, which had been stagnant for over 10 years, a ‘public-supported private rental linked maintenance project’ is underway, and the Ministry of Land and Housing and Urban Guarantee Corporation (HUG) are proceeding with rapid improvements of old housing areas.
In particular, it is expected that synergy effects will occur through simultaneous progress with the newly selected residential environment improvement project.
Lee Jeong-geun, Director of the Environment and Urban Bureau of Changwon City, stated, “We have reduced the burden on the poor local finances so that urban regeneration projects and redevelopment projects can proceed smoothly,” and added, “Through continuous urban regeneration, we will improve various residential environments and implement the mayor’s administrative philosophy to create a sustainable environmental city of Changwon by improving the water quality of Masan Bay through groundwater maintenance in old housing areas.”
