Yeo Sang-gi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Unification, said, "We welcome Deputy Secretary Biegun's emphasis yesterday that inter-Korean cooperation is an important factor in creating a stable environment on the Korean Peninsula, and his statement supporting the South Korean government's efforts to improve inter-Korean relations."
In a briefing held after consultations with Lee Do-hoon, Director General for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs, and the U.S. chief negotiator on North Korea, Deputy Secretary Biegun said, "We believe that inter-Korean cooperation plays an important role in creating a more stable environment on the Korean Peninsula," and added, "The U.S. fully supports the South Korean government in pursuing its goals of inter-Korean cooperation with North Korea."
Meanwhile, Representative Biegun met with Suh Hoon, Director of the National Security Office, on the same day to share assessments on North Korea-related developments and discuss ways to advance the Korean Peninsula peace process.
According to the Blue House, the meeting between Director Suh and Deputy Secretary Biegun took place from 10 a.m. and lasted about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Director Suh said, "The strong ROK-U.S. alliance is the foundation of our foreign and security policy," and added, "Let us continue close communication between South Korea and the U.S." The Blue House also reported that Deputy Secretary Biegun reaffirmed the U.S. government's firm commitment to the ROK-U.S. alliance.
