[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Choi Hyun-joo] Changwon City in Gyeongnam announced on the 9th that it participated in the launch ceremony of the ‘Carbon Neutral Local Government Action Alliance’ held at COEX in Seoul.

Mayor Heo Seong-mu of Changwon was unable to attend the event in person on the 7th due to a schedule conflict with a special city meeting, but he signed the participation agreement and joined the launch ceremony through a declaration video stating the city’s active commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

The ‘Carbon Neutral Local Government Action Alliance’ is a coalition of all 17 metropolitan local governments and 63 basic local governments cooperating in solidarity with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Currently, Changwon City has declared itself as the ‘2030 Smart Climate Environment City Changwon’ and is laying the foundation for its environmental vision for the next decade by responding to the climate crisis, leading the Green New Deal, managing a digital-based smart environment, and creating a sustainable city together with its citizens.

Mayor Heo stated, “Carbon neutrality means offsetting greenhouse gas emissions with absorption so that the net emissions become ‘0.’ If the temperature rise is not kept within 2.0℃ by 2100, serious climate disasters such as sea level rise and heatwaves will occur. To maintain the temperature rise within 2.0℃, achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 is inevitable.”
