[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Hyundai Oilbank is set to fully introduce Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into factory safety management. Technologies previously mainly applied to process control will now be expanded to safety management, and the Daesan plant is expected to rapidly evolve into a smart factory.
Hyundai Oilbank announced on the 9th that it will unveil unmanned patrol vehicles and intelligent CCTV in the second half of this year.
The unmanned patrol vehicles, introduced for the first time in the industry, are equipped with precision GPS, hazardous gas detection sensors, and thermal imaging cameras. They autonomously patrol the entire factory 24 hours a day, collecting information related to hazardous gases and fires. Information recognized as an emergency is promptly transmitted to the integrated control center, which is expected to prevent major accidents.
The intelligent CCTV system automatically identifies abnormal behavior of workers in CCTV footage using AI alone, without the need for monitoring personnel. Hyundai Oilbank plans to prioritize installing intelligent CCTV in high-risk workspaces where hazardous gases may remain to ensure worker safety.
Hyundai Oilbank has already introduced a 'hazardous gas detection system' utilizing IoT technology during the regular maintenance period from April to May.
The 'hazardous gas detection system' uses sensors installed in confined spaces such as tanks and towers to measure hazardous gas concentrations in real time and transmit related information to the integrated control center. In an emergency, an immediate alarm sounds and on-site work is halted. Workers can avoid the risk of suffocation accidents caused by hazardous gases. Hyundai Oilbank plans to expand the installation of this system by 2021 to prevent related accidents in advance.
A Hyundai Oilbank official stated, "Even during the large-scale regular maintenance in May, we achieved an industry-first 18 million man-hours without accidents," adding, "With the management's strong commitment to safety and a digital-based system, we plan to demonstrate a higher level of safety-first management."
