Gwangju City Conducts On-Site Inspection of Flood-Prone Roads Ahead of Monsoon Season On the afternoon of the 8th, Kim Jong-hyo, Deputy Mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, visited the Songjeong Underpass in Gwangsan-gu, a road prone to flooding during the monsoon season's heavy rains. He received a report from officials on the current status of the underpass facility management and the flood response system, urging them to do their best to prevent flood damage through thorough preparation. [Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] On the 8th, Kim Jong-hyo, Deputy Mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, visited Songjeong Underpass in Sochon-dong, Gwangsan-gu, and Songjeong Drainage Pump Station in Songjeong-dong to conduct an on-site inspection.

The Songjeong Underpass, also known as ‘Yeonggwangtong,’ is a location with heavy traffic, but despite this, from 2008 to 2010, it was flooded three times due to heavy rain, causing frequent vehicle submersion damage, making it a focused management area for flood concerns during the rainy season.

The Songjeong Drainage Pump Station has been operating since 2000 to prevent habitual flooding in the low-lying areas of Songjeong-dong and Dosan-dong.

During the inspection, they checked the status of facility management in preparation for the rainy season and assumed a scenario where the underpass is flooded due to heavy rain, verifying ▲operation of emergency generators and drainage pumps ▲emergency drainage system in cooperation with the fire station ▲detour guidance during traffic control ▲emergency work manual when weather warnings are issued.

Deputy Mayor Kim said, “In the situation where COVID-19 is spreading, if disasters such as heavy rain occur, citizens’ damage and inconvenience may increase,” and added, “Please do your best to manage facilities such as steep slopes, drainage pump stations, and flood-prone areas.”
