[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] On the 8th, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it awarded government honors including the Green Stripes Order of Service Merit and Ministerial Commendations to 29 individuals recognized for their contributions to information security, including Professor Donghoon Lee of Korea University, in celebration of the 9th Information Security Day.
The commemorative ceremony was held at The-K Hotel Seoul under the theme "DNA of the Non-Face-to-Face Era, Security On!". Information Security Day is a government-designated memorial day observed annually on the second Wednesday of July to promote cyber threat prevention and the public’s habitual practice of information security.
At the event, following a written congratulatory message from President Moon Jae-in, an awards ceremony was held for 29 individuals who have contributed to the advancement of information security in South Korea. Professor Donghoon Lee of Korea University received the Green Stripes Order of Service Merit, Sangwoo Jo, Head of the National Security Technology Research Institute, was awarded the Presidential Citation, and Ilyong Kim, CEO of N&SP Co., Ltd., received the Industrial Service Medal.
The keynote speeches on the theme "A Safe Cyber World in the Non-Face-to-Face Era" were delivered by Brian Ware, Deputy Director of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security; Suhwan Jung, President of the Korea Institute of Information Security & Cryptology; and Yonghwan Lee, CEO of SK Infosec. A conference was also held with various speakers from private companies and government, discussing information security technology issues and trends in the non-face-to-face era, cyberattack response cases, and policy directions.
Alongside this, the Ministry of Science and ICT signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with six companies involved in manufacturing and operating AI speakers?Naver, Lotte Shopping, Kakao Enterprise, KG, LG Uplus, and SK Telecom?to strengthen the security of AI speakers and other IoT products. This was arranged to reaffirm joint efforts by the government and private sector to enhance security for AI speakers and IoT products amid the diversification and escalation of security threats following the commercialization of 5G.
Throughout July, online events commemorating "Information Security Month" are also underway. Following the first week’s information security character fan art contest, security knowledge quiz events and a campaign certifying the top 10 information security practices will be held sequentially from the second week onward.
