[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] The U.S. Department of Justice and federal prosecutors expressed disappointment over the decision by a Korean court not to extradite Son Jung-woo, the operator of Welcome to Video, the world's largest child sexual exploitation site, to the United States.
On the 7th (local time), regarding South Korea's refusal to comply with the U.S. extradition request, the U.S. Department of Justice cited a statement from Michael Sherwin, Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, saying, "We are disappointed by the court's refusal to extradite one of the world's most dangerous child sexual exploitation offenders, who has had a significant impact on U.S. citizens."
The U.S. judicial authorities stated, "Despite the court's decision, we appreciate the efforts of the Korean Ministry of Justice on this matter, and we will continue to cooperate with the Ministry of Justice and other international partners to combat online transnational crimes that harm children, the most vulnerable members of our population."
Earlier, the U.S. Department of Justice requested South Korea to extradite Son, but on the 6th, the Seoul High Court denied the extradition, citing ongoing related investigations within Korea.
