Daelim Develops 'Separated Range Hood' as Quiet as a Library

[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] Daelim Industrial announced on the 7th that it has developed a ‘low-noise high-performance fan-separated range hood’ as quiet as a library and has filed a patent for it. Last year, Daelim established a five-year long-term roadmap to reduce residential noise and is conducting various research and development projects.

Daelim’s low-noise high-performance fan-separated range hood reduces noise by up to 13 decibels (dB) compared to existing products. When operating at its quietest, it generates noise below 30dB. The noise level of a person whispering quietly or a quiet library is around 30dB. Even at its strongest operation, it produces only about 48dB of noise, which is slightly higher than the low-noise mode of a home air conditioner (42~45dB).

Although quiet, the smoke suction speed is actually faster than before. Daelim’s product can suction and discharge the amount of smoke that existing range hoods suction in the first 40 seconds within 5 seconds.

Range hoods installed in existing apartments have fans attached inside the hood above the gas stove, which directly transmits noise indoors. Daelim changed the design by separating and installing the fan that sucks in smoke outside, such as in an outdoor unit room, reducing noise generation. This is because the sound generated when the fan operates is the fundamental cause of noise.

By analyzing airflow, the direction of the fan and piping was also adjusted to reduce noise. Previously, the fan and piping were bent at a 90° angle. As a result, the smoke quickly discharged through the fan collided multiple times with the piping, amplifying the noise. Daelim solved this by aligning the direction of incoming smoke and the fan in a straight line. Additionally, the size and shape of the fan blades were optimized, and the shape of the outlet was specially designed to prevent noise generated at the outlet from reflecting back.

Jaeuk Lee, team leader of Daelim Industrial’s Housing Equipment Team, said, “This achievement is thanks to continuous collaboration and research with partner companies,” adding, “Although harmful smoke is generated when cooking at home, the frequency of range hood use was low due to noise. We hope Daelim’s range hood will not only eliminate noise but also protect the health of residents.”
