Nate Entertainment News Comments End... Entertainment Comments Disappear from the Three Major Portals

Rising Public Opinion to Remove Comments on Celebrity Deaths Due to Malicious Comments
Kakao Leads, Followed by Naver and Nate in Removing Comments on Entertainment News

Nate Entertainment News Comments End... Entertainment Comments Disappear from the Three Major Portals

[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-gyu Lee] Nate discontinued its entertainment news comment service on the 7th. Following Naver and Kakao, Nate's termination of the entertainment news comment service means that all three major domestic portals have now eliminated comments on entertainment news.

On the same day, Nate ended the comment service on its entertainment news pages. Nate stated in a notice on the 30th of last month, "We have reflected user opinions expressing concerns about the negative effects of entertainment news comments, beyond their positive role in supporting broadcast programs or entertainers."

The series of deaths among entertainers, including singer and actress Sulli (real name Choi Jin-ri) last year, who suffered from malicious comments, has raised calls in our society for improvements to comment services.

While Nate will continue to provide comment services in news categories other than entertainment, it will make users' comment histories fully public. The 'MY Comments' section, which displays a user's comment history, will be unconditionally visible to other users. Previously, Nate allowed users to choose whether to disclose their comment histories. Nate explained, "The social responsibility of comments is increasingly emphasized."

Nate's policy is due to the "malicious commenter balloon effect." After the two major portals, Naver and Kakao, successively stopped entertainment news comment services, malicious commenters massively migrated to Nate and Instagram earlier this year.

Naver stopped its entertainment news comment service starting in March and has also made public the histories of comments users have posted on news articles. Previously, Naver allowed users to decide whether to disclose their news comments. Recently, Naver updated its 'AI Cleanbot,' which uses AI technology to analyze the context of comment sentences and filter out malicious comments. The AI Cleanbot automatically detects and blinds comments containing profanity and vulgar language.

Kakao also eliminated its entertainment news comment service in October last year, and in February added 'discrimination and hate' as criteria for reporting comments in the news comment services on the Daum portal and KakaoTalk #Tab. Additionally, it introduced features to manage comment visibility, such as 'hide' and 'collapse' functions.
