[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The police mascot character symbolizing female officers, 'Posuni,' will wear pants instead of a skirt for the first time in 21 years. The eyelashes will be removed, and the ears, previously hidden by short hair, will be revealed.

According to the National Police Agency on the 7th, the Police Commission deliberated and approved the partial amendment of the "Police Officer Symbol Podori and Posuni Management Regulations" with these changes the day before.

Podori and Posuni, created in 1999, were named by taking 'Po' from 'Police' and 'Po' from the Joseon Dynasty's Podo-cheong and Pozol. The name also embodies the meaning of 'Po' as embracing and protecting the people, and 'Po' from the Chinese legendary figure Bao Zheng, symbolizing integrity and fairness.

Since then, Posuni has always worn a skirt, had eyelashes, and covered her ears with short hair. However, there were concerns that Posuni's appearance could reinforce gender stereotypes and discriminatory biases.

In response, the police decided to partially change Posuni's character. The decision to reveal the ears symbolizes the commitment to listen to the voices of the people and to swiftly and accurately gather security information to prevent various crimes, the police explained.
