[Asia Economy Kim Hyun-jun, Golf Specialist Reporter] The 'Hulk' Bryson DeChambeau (USA) is making headlines with his 'infinite long drives.'
On the 6th (Korean time), at the Detroit Golf Club (par 72, 7,334 yards) in Detroit, Michigan, USA, where the PGA Tour Rocket Mortgage Classic (total prize money $7.5 million) concluded, he recorded an average driving distance of 350.6 yards over 4 rounds. This is a historic record that surpasses the 341.5 yards set by the 'resurrected golf emperor' Tiger Woods (USA) during the 2005 Open Championship at St Andrews Old Course by 9 yards.
DeChambeau hit an incredible 377 yards on the 17th hole (par 5) on the first day, and on the 13th hole (par 4) with a length of 399 yards, he attempted a '1-on' shot, showcasing his extraordinary long-driving ability. He added with some regret, "1-on was enough, but the direction pulled to the left." Interestingly, after the 2019 season last September, he increased his weight from 91 kg by 9 kg, and during the three months when the PGA Tour was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he gained another 9 kg, completing a massive 109 kg physique.
Of course, it was all for long drives. He proudly stated, "I increased muscle mass through intense exercise along with dietary control." It is worth noting that DeChambeau is leading the 2020 season in average driving distance with 323.0 yards. This is the so-called 'casino unbeatable theory.' No matter how many people gather, a casino never loses. Casinos have far more capital than individuals and apply slightly advantageous game rules.
DeChambeau also claims, "If you hit far first, the next shot becomes relatively easier, allowing you to get closer to the hole." In fact, this made the course designer Donald Ross's design intentions meaningless. The bunker at the IP point where tee shots usually land was meant to induce accurate tee shots, but DeChambeau cleared the bunker entirely. He celebrated, saying, "Pursuing a different path from others made this victory even more meaningful," and "I changed my thoughts about my body and golf and reached the top in a completely different way."
