[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Yeon-ju] Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae has refuted the controversy over 'covering for her son.'

On the 6th, Minister Choo posted on her social network service (SNS), saying, "Covering for Minister Choo Mi-ae's son? Just wait 3 seconds," and added, "The distortion is absurd, so I am releasing the video from the National Assembly Judiciary Committee at that time. Please check the truth of the answer in the video," along with a 2-minute video.

The 2-minute 14-second video posted by Minister Choo shows her responding to questions from Assemblyman Shin Dong-geun of the Democratic Party of Korea regarding her son Seo Mo (27) at the National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee on the 1st.

When Assemblyman Shin asked, "There have been reports in the media about your son. Is it possible that the prosecution is counterattacking through media play? Do you have any explanations?" Minister Choo replied, "There is nothing to explain. I already explained everything in detail during the hearing."

Minister Choo explained the suspicions surrounding her son, saying, "I am amazed once again at how serious the collusion between the media and prosecution is, revealing even the personal details of my son whom I want to protect," and added, "Since I am a public figure, I will endure it, but my son served his military duty without missing a single day."

She continued, "(My son) actually had surgery on one leg. If he had undergone a re-examination, he probably would not have had to serve in the military. Since I am also a public figure," she said, "he did not take the re-examination and went back to the military, but one leg hurt again, and he had to undergo surgery unintentionally."

She added, "Actually, if I speak in more detail, they might say I am 'providing guidelines for the investigation,' so I will not say more, but my son is very angry, very sad, and shedding tears," and requested, "I hope you do not touch this any further."

Minister Choo concluded the video by saying, "I sincerely hope that the investigation will be conducted quickly to find out what the truth is," and added, "I hope no one raises suspicions, joins forces with the media to create a mess, then comes to the National Assembly to make noise and use parliamentary immunity."

In particular, Minister Choo emphasized, "I hope you do not touch this (distorted reporting) any further," and "The son’s case should be investigated quickly to reveal the truth."

Meanwhile, Minister Choo’s son, Mr. A, served as a KATUSA (Korean Augmentation To the United States Army) under the US Forces Korea in 2017 when Minister Choo was the leader of the Democratic Party. Regarding this, the United Future Party demanded a statement on the 'son’s KATUSA privileged service suspicion.'
