[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] TrinamiX, a subsidiary of German chemical company BASF and a leader in 3D imaging and infrared sensor technology, has developed a method to apply its near-infrared spectroscopy-based mobile solution to plastic sorting and recycling.
The portable device equipped with TrinamiX’s data analysis mobile app can accurately identify and distinguish the components of various plastics. This contributes to plastic recyclability, benefiting both the environment and businesses.
Near-infrared spectroscopy is a proven technology used in research laboratories worldwide. TrinamiX’s innovative solution, utilizing this technology, is in the form of a portable spectrometer slightly larger than a typical smartphone, enabling sophisticated data analysis on-site via wireless cloud connectivity, making it usable anywhere.
With TrinamiX’s near-infrared spectroscopy-based solution, all plastics can be recognized within seconds, from polyolefins such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to polyethylene terephthalate (PET), commonly used in beverage bottles. Additionally, plastics particularly important to recyclers, such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polyamide (PA), can also be accurately identified. TrinamiX also stated that additional materials requiring identification can be added according to customer needs.
The data measured by the spectrometer is compared with spectra of different plastic types stored in the cloud, and the material is identified within seconds, with results displayed on the app. Measurement results can be checked not only on mobile devices but also on computers, allowing immediate analysis, further evaluation, and simultaneous downloading.
Moreover, the system design’s flexibility allows continuous improvements for customized solutions that meet customer requirements, enabling users to easily update or apply new materials and applications without purchasing new hardware.
TrinamiX’s solution can be conveniently used when rapid identification is needed. In the recycling sector, it is effective for companies requiring faster and simpler mobile solutions than large equipment. It can be a good alternative for recycling collection sites, processing plants, and recycling manufacturers, and can also be usefully applied in closing companies or large dealerships.
