[Asia Economy Reporters Lee Ji-eun and Lim Chun-han] Joo Ho-young, floor leader of the United Future Party, expressed his intention to block the 'Working National Assembly Act' being promoted by the Democratic Party of Korea, saying it would "deepen one-party dictatorship." He also argued that the controversy surrounding Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae and Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl should be resolved through a special prosecutor.
At an emergency committee meeting held at the National Assembly on the 6th, Floor Leader Joo said, "If the Working National Assembly Act passes, the Democratic Party's one-sided dominance and one-party dictatorship will deepen further."
He pointed out, "(The Democratic Party) will continue to push forward with numbers and power, and if that is not enough, they plan to unilaterally enact a so-called 'Working National Assembly Act.' However, if you look at the contents of the Working National Assembly Act, it only has a plausible title but is actually a law that neutralizes the National Assembly and the opposition party."
He said, "If a party with a majority of seats holds meetings regularly and passes bills in subcommittees and plenary sessions as long as they have a majority, it denies the very existence of the opposition party. They are already acting arbitrarily with the current laws, so pushing such a blatant law is not a Working National Assembly Act but a National Assembly Act that paves the way for dictatorship. We will do our best to block it in the Steering Committee."
Floor Leader Joo said, "We have watched the ruling party's one-party dictatorship rampage for over a month, but doing nothing is not the answer, so from this week, we have decided to participate in the National Assembly's operations. Regarding policies, budgets, and bills, we will fiercely distinguish right from wrong and propose alternatives to make the National Assembly helpful to the country and the people."
He also emphasized the need for a special prosecutor regarding Minister Choo's investigation directive, saying, "Basically, Minister Choo's exercise of investigative directive power is an abuse of authority and is aimed at persecuting Prosecutor General Yoon. However, the only means that everyone can accept is a special prosecutor promoted by the National Assembly."
He pointed out, "A special prosecutor can be requested by the Minister of Justice or the National Assembly, but to avoid disputes over neutrality, Minister Choo should first request a special prosecutor, and if that fails, the National Assembly will step in to promote it. This case, tangled with the Minister of Justice, Prosecutor General, district prosecutors, and other prosecutors, is precisely a case that should be investigated by a special prosecutor."
Lee Jong-bae, chairman of the Policy Committee, raised his voice, saying, "Since the Moon administration began, apartment prices in downtown Seoul have risen by 56.6%. Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Kim Hyun-mi must take responsibility for the failure of the 21 policies implemented so far. We are considering ways to hold Minister Kim accountable."
He added, "The person responsible for comprehensive real estate measures is the Deputy Prime Minister for Economy. Previously, the emergency committee chairman asked, 'Why is the Deputy Prime Minister silent?' but there has been no response. Our party will step up whenever a table for normalizing real estate policy is prepared, and this is a time when bipartisan wisdom is needed for the people terrified by real estate issues."
