[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] The Gyeonggi-do Fire and Disaster Headquarters is gaining attention for saving precious lives one after another using drones.
The Gyeonggi Fire Headquarters received a joint police response report at 2:56 PM on the 2nd that an elderly person in their 80s was missing. They deployed a drone and identified the location of an elderly woman A (83 years old) wandering near the Pyeongtaekho waterfront at 4:19 PM the same day, and rescued her using a boat.
At the time of rescue, the elderly woman complained only of slight back pain and had no other health issues.
Earlier in February, the Gyeonggi Fire Headquarters also used fire department drones to consecutively rescue a teenage girl and a woman in their 20s who were attempting extreme self-harm.
The Gyeonggi Fire Headquarters currently owns 23 drones across 15 stations including the headquarters. This year, they plan to deploy one drone each to 4 stations, and in 2021 and 2022, they plan to additionally deploy drones to 10 stations each year.
A representative of the Gyeonggi Fire Headquarters explained, "Drones enable three-dimensional on-site command at large fires and rescues, enhancing on-site response capabilities and ensuring the safety of personnel in hazardous disaster sites. The role of drones in rescue operations will grow in the future."
