[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Incheon City has developed and is pilot-operating the nation's first mobile water quality monitoring system that can measure the discharge water quality of wastewater discharge facilities in real time.

According to the city on the 5th, there are currently 3,893 wastewater discharge facilities in the Incheon area, accounting for about 7.2% of the nation’s total, but only 16 facilities (0.4%) are required to install water quality measurement devices (TMS) under relevant laws.

The city conducts on-site inspections of permitted wastewater discharge facilities to check the operation status of prevention facilities and compliance with discharge standards, but there are limitations in enforcement personnel. Especially, environmental monitoring during vulnerable hours when illegal acts such as unauthorized wastewater discharge frequently occur is practically more difficult.

The system developed by Incheon City this time installs sensor-type water quality measuring devices at the final discharge outlets of wastewater discharge facilities, allowing pollution level measurements to be monitored via PC or mobile phones.

In addition to real-time pollution measurement, the system has the advantage of being able to automatically collect samples when concentration values exceed set thresholds, and it can be installed and operated while moving to any location, which is expected to play a significant role in strengthening the monitoring system for wastewater discharge facilities.

The city plans to pilot-operate the system targeting business sites suspected of illegal activities including unauthorized wastewater discharge, and then review the possibility of expanding the project.
