[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The United Future Party demanded a shift in North Korea policy, stating that "the event production of the North Korea-US summit has expired," in response to the government's plan to promote the North Korea-US summit.
On the 5th, United Future Party spokesperson Bae Jun-young said in a statement, "President Moon claims to be the driver between North Korea and the US, but if the US and North Korea have gotten out of the car, who is he going with and where?"
Spokesperson Bae pointed out that Steven Biegun, US Deputy Secretary of State and Special Representative for North Korea, responded to the prospects of the North Korea-US summit by saying, "I don't think it will probably happen between now and the US presidential election," and that Choe Son-hui, First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of North Korea, said, "There are people who prematurely express intentions to mediate the North Korea-US summit," adding, "This moment makes the president's words about Korea doing its utmost to bring North Korea and the US back to the negotiating table meaningless."
He expressed concern, saying, "Inter-Korean relations are in a critical crisis to the extent that they are evaluated as having reverted to the state before the Panmunjom Declaration," and "Yesterday, on the occasion of the US Independence Day, North Korea extensively highlighted and celebrated the 3rd anniversary of the test launch of the intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)-class 'Hwasong-14'."
Spokesperson Bae also criticized the recent security line reshuffle, saying, "In the meantime, the president abruptly replaced the diplomatic and security line after three years, but looking at the new line, they are people who have long built the tower of North Korea appeasement that collapsed with a loud explosion," and "It is hard to find resolute aides who would recommend a firm response in case of emergency, even if you look carefully."
