[Asia Economy International Desk Reporter] As Canada has effectively initiated sanctions against China in response to the implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law (Hong Kong Security Law), China has retaliated by stating that "interference in Hong Kong affairs violates international law," escalating tensions between the two countries.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 5th, China publicly condemned Canada's sanctions against it. The Chinese Embassy in Canada issued a statement saying, "Some Western countries, including Canada, are interfering in Hong Kong affairs under the pretext of human rights," adding, "This seriously violates international law and the norms of international relations." The statement further noted, "The new Hong Kong Security Law will protect Hong Kong's security." The Hong Kong government also criticized Canada's sanctions against China, calling them "very disappointing."
Canada is preparing to pressure China directly with sanctions for enacting the Hong Kong Security Law.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on the 3rd that Canada would suspend the extradition treaty with Hong Kong. Hong Kong has extradition treaties with more than 30 countries worldwide, but Canada is the first to sever judicial relations with Hong Kong since China strengthened its control over the region.
Prime Minister Trudeau stated, "Canada is a staunch supporter of 'one country, two systems,'" adding, "Canada will not authorize the export of sensitive military goods to Hong Kong, just as it does with mainland China. We are also considering other measures, including those related to immigration."
