[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] #. Lee Youngju (alias), who works at a Gyeonggi-do affiliated organization, discovered a hole on one side of the wall while changing clothes in the locker room after arriving at work and felt something was wrong. Lee immediately reported the hole, and a small camera was found after an inspection with a detector. Gyeonggi-do identified the male employee who installed the hidden camera, and the employee soon underwent police investigation.
Following the discovery of an illegal hidden camera (molka) in the restroom of the KBS building last May, another illegal hidden camera was found in the locker room of a Gyeonggi-do affiliated organization at the end of last month, highlighting the ongoing molka crimes and increasing interest in tools that can prevent them.
According to the industry on the 4th, the use of cards and applications to prevent the rapidly increasing illegal filming crimes has been on the rise recently.
In the previous Nth Room case, videos illegally filmed with hidden cameras in public restrooms, bathhouses, dormitories, and motels were shared, which heightened women's anxiety. While various institutions and companies have introduced detectors to root out hidden cameras, electronic field detection methods have the drawback of detecting all metal objects, resulting in lower accuracy.
Espresto, which launched the hidden camera detection app 'Lily's Map,' also announced on the 4th that a recent case was reported where a user detected a hidden camera in a locker room using the app.
Espresto added that a user inspecting a hole in the locker room wall with the app detected a suspicious hole near a hinge, reported it to the police, and a detector confirmed the presence of a hidden camera.
According to the '2020 Sexual Crime White Paper' announced by the Ministry of Justice in February, the number of illegal filming crimes using cameras increased nearly sixfold from 412 cases in 2013 to 2,388 cases in 2018. In particular, since illegal filming was included in the registered sexual crimes in 2013, the rate of offenders re-registered for the same crime reached as high as 75%.
To alleviate citizens' anxiety caused by illegal filming crimes, the Seongbuk Police Station in Seoul has been placing hidden camera detection cards in 150 restrooms, shower rooms, and locker rooms within its jurisdiction since the 8th of last month, among various public-private efforts to prevent illegal filming crimes.
A police official stated, "The hidden camera detection cards placed in restrooms can be easily used by anyone to inspect their surroundings," adding, "They help relieve the anxiety of citizens who feel uneasy every time they use public restrooms and are also expected to suppress criminal impulses through the posting of warning signs."
