[Asia Economy Reporter Chunhee Lee] The number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in Brazil has surpassed 1.5 million. For three consecutive days, more than 40,000 new cases have been reported daily, showing a steep increase.
According to the Brazilian Ministry of Health on the 3rd (local time), the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Brazil reached 1,539,081, an increase of 42,223 from the previous day. Brazil has recorded over 40,000 new daily cases for three consecutive days since the 1st.
The death toll rose by 1,290 from the previous day to 63,174. The increase in deaths recorded on this day is the highest since the 23rd of last month (1,374).
The fatality rate, which represents the ratio of deaths to total confirmed cases, has significantly decreased to 4.1%, compared to a previous peak of over 7%.
Among the total confirmed cases in Brazil, about 600,000 patients are still undergoing treatment, while approximately 868,000 have recovered.
Despite the spread of COVID-19, local governments in Brazil are accelerating the easing of social distancing measures to resume economic activities.
In S?o Paulo, Brazil's largest city, restaurants, beauty salons, and other businesses will be allowed to operate starting from the 6th, provided they comply with hygiene management guidelines. However, daily operating hours cannot exceed 6 hours, and businesses must close by 5 p.m. Additionally, only up to 40% of the maximum capacity is allowed to enter.
