The Naming Ceremony of the World's Largest Container Ship 7th Line 'HMM Hamburg' Held

HMM New Employee Kim Minji Takes on Role as Godmother

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] HMM announced on the 1st that it held the naming ceremony for the world's largest 24,000 TEU (a unit referring to one 6m container) class container ship, the 7th vessel, 'HMM Hamburg.'


The ceremony, held at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering's Okpo Shipyard in Geoje-si, Gyeongnam, was attended by about 60 people, including Kim Yong-beom, 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance; Kim Yang-soo, Vice Minister of Oceans and Fisheries; Byeon Gwang-yong, Mayor of Geoje; Kwon Woo-seok, Vice President of the Export-Import Bank of Korea; Cho Gyu-yeol, Head of Policy Support Division at Korea Ocean Business Corporation; and Bae Jae-hoon, CEO of HMM.


Vice Minister Kim Yong-beom stated, "The shipping industry is a core element in securing export competitiveness and a pivotal industry with significant ripple effects on the shipbuilding and port industries," adding, "We will comprehensively utilize all available means to support the shipping revitalization plan."


Notably, at this event, HMM's new employee Kim Min-ji (24, female) took on the role of 'Daemo (代母),' the person who cuts the rope to send the ship into the sea, drawing attention. Kim said, "Hope arises when many people walk together," and expressed her thoughts, "All new employees, including myself, will walk forward together."


Meanwhile, the HMM Hamburg is the seventh of twelve 24,000 TEU class vessels being sequentially deployed by September this year, and the fifth of seven vessels ordered from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering.
