Kolon Industries Participates in '2020 Hydrogen Mobility+ Show'... Presents Vision for Demand Fuel Cell Materials

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Kolon Industries, Inc. announced on the 1st that it will participate in the '2020 Hydrogen Mobility+ Show' held from today until the 3rd at KINTEX in Ilsan, Gyeonggi-do, presenting its vision as a leading global company in core hydrogen fuel cell materials and components.

At the exhibition, Kolon Industries, Inc. will present the technological development trends and mass production strategies of hydrogen fuel cell components such as Membrane Humidifier, Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA), and Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM), and introduce the development status of hydrocarbon-based polymer electrolyte membranes, a next-generation core material candidate.

The Membrane Humidifier, a core component of the Balance of Plant for hydrogen fuel cells, is based on Kolon Industries, Inc.'s 31 years of accumulated membrane design and manufacturing technology. Globally, only a very few companies possess production technology, and Kolon Industries, Inc. not only owns the largest scale of production facilities but also secures a dominant position domestically and internationally through annual investments. After commercializing the Membrane Humidifier for the first time in the world in 2013 through cooperative development with Hyundai Motor Company, it is promoting cooperative development with global companies aiming for more than 50% of the global market share after 2025.

Regarding Membrane Electrode Assembly, the company has secured product design technology by application field and development stage, fused with film post-processing technology accumulated over the years, and has established pilot facilities capable of product realization at the Magok research complex in Seoul.

Kolon Industries, Inc.'s Membrane Electrode Assembly also has the advantage of internalizing the core material Polymer Electrolyte Membrane, which accounts for the highest cost ratio in the component production process. Since 2008, the company has been developing polymer electrolyte membranes and holds original technology for hydrocarbon-based reinforced composite membranes for fuel cells.

Kolon Industries, Inc. plans to provide integrated solutions for core hydrogen fuel cell materials in the future. Accordingly, it is expanding its market step-by-step not only for hydrogen electric vehicles but also for housing/building use, drones, heavy equipment, trains, and ships.

Lee Moo-seok, Executive Director in charge of the Fuel Cell Business at Kolon Industries, Inc., stated, "There is a new opportunity for the materials and components industry within the hydrogen industry ecosystem," and added, "We will expand our business not only in hydrogen fuel cells but also in the water electrolysis field by utilizing the core material technologies we possess," revealing the company's mid- to long-term business strategy in the hydrogen industry.
