Korea Transportation Safety Authority's 'Future Vehicle Power Measurement Method' Becomes Global Standard

[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Jiwon] The output measurement method for future vehicles proposed by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority has been recognized as an international standard.

The Authority announced on the 30th that on the 11th, the output measurement method for eco-friendly future vehicles proposed by South Korea was adopted as an international standard by the Pollution and Energy Subcommittee under the UN International Standards Harmonization Organization.

The Authority first proposed this concept in 2014 to the Electric Vehicle Performance Expert Technical Group (EVE) under the Pollution and Energy Subcommittee and completed verification and supplementation through six years of activities.

This method was developed through the international harmonization project for safety standards at the Vehicle Safety Research Institute of the Authority, designated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport as the dedicated agency for international standards harmonization.

The measurement targets are hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles with a total vehicle weight of 3.5 tons or less, and measurements can be taken using a chassis dynamometer or a hub dynamometer.

The measurement methods include TP1, which measures considering the efficiency transmitted from the drive battery (energy storage device) to the engine, and TP2, which measures considering the efficiency transmitted from the vehicle’s wheels to the engine.

By introducing the output measurement method for eco-friendly future vehicles, consumers can more easily understand the power performance of vehicles with complex structures, and the industry can benefit in developing electrified vehicle power performance.

Ryu Dojeong, head of the Vehicle Safety Research Institute at the Authority, said, "We expect that the establishment of international standards will greatly contribute to clarifying vehicle specification management and laying the foundation for promoting the spread of eco-friendly future vehicles."
