[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Hyesoo] On the afternoon of the 20th, MBC's "Baekfather: Don't Stop Cooking!" (hereafter Baekfather) aired, featuring Baek Jong-won and Yang Se-hyung meeting with cooking beginners.
On this day, "Baekfather" held its first broadcast with cooking beginners (Yorini: a combination of "cooking" and "children," meaning people who don't even know the basics of cooking). Welcoming 48 teams of Yorini through the monitor, Baek Jong-won said, "Are there really this many clumsy cooks?" and asked for patience, saying, "Since I'm doing this with Se-hyung, please wait a moment." Yang Se-hyung then appeared and caught attention by revealing, "Participants ranged from 18-year-old high school students to 65-year-old seniors from 19 regions nationwide."
Before the main cooking show began, Baek Jong-won said, "I didn't know there were so many Yorini in our country," and emphasized, "Although it's a live broadcast, it would be good for those who have no choice but to rely on delivery food."
The main ingredient for the first broadcast of "Baekfather" was eggs. Baek Jong-won said, "No matter what dish, you need rice, so we'll start with cooking rice," adding, "Many people find it difficult and don't know how, so they often buy convenience store meals." He also instructed those without rice to quickly buy some nearby before cooking.
The rice cooking process was carried out step-by-step, matching the Yorini's level, starting with washing the rice. Baek Jong-won demonstrated, "In the past, we used to scrub the rice hard, but nowadays, just stirring gently with your fingers is enough." While Baek Jong-won soaked and stirred the rice in water, Yang Se-hyung helped by counting numbers beside him.
Seeing some Yorini trying to cook rice after washing it only once, Yang Se-hyung expressed surprise, saying, "I didn't expect people to be this unaware." Baek Jong-won also said, "You need to wash it one more time. I think many people are as impatient as I am."
Next, the eldest Yorin asked, "Is there a big time difference between cooking rice in a pot and a rice cooker?" Baek Jong-won replied, "When cooking rice in a pot, the time can vary depending on the heat level," and shared a tip, "When it starts boiling vigorously, I slightly reduce the heat."
Also, when frying eggs, many participants had never tried it before, surprising Baek Jong-won and Yang Se-hyung once again. One participant even cracked an egg into a pan without turning on the heat and started frying, to which Baek Jong-won laughed and said, "It's okay."
After witnessing the Yorini's laughable attempts at frying eggs, Baek Jong-won taught the proper way to fry eggs. He explained, "Two tablespoons of cooking oil is just right," and added, "When the pan starts to smoke slightly, carefully place the cracked egg on it."
However, while Baek Jong-won was supervising the Yorini's cooking, he accidentally burned his own fried egg, prompting Yang Se-hyung to comment, "I think you need to add some oil."
MBC's new cooking program "Baekfather" is a cooking father Baek Jong-won's untact (contactless) interactive cooking show aimed at Yorini who are intimidated by cooking. It airs every Saturday at 5 p.m.
