Seongdong-gu Supports ‘Safe Home 4 Types’ Including Window Locks for Single Female Households

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) is launching support for the installation of the ‘Safe Home 4-piece Kit’ to establish a safety net for vulnerable single-woman households in multi-family housing and one-room units.

In May, the district was finally selected for the Women’s Safe Village Project SS (Safe Single) Zone creation project for single-woman households in the ‘2020 Women’s Safe Village Project’ contest hosted by Seoul City.

Accordingly, about 100 single-woman households will be provided with four types of safety devices including indoor locks, and ‘Safe Bells’ will be installed in single-woman stores.

The four safety devices consist of a double lock ‘Auxiliary Front Door Key,’ a ‘Door Opening Sensor’ that sends a text message to acquaintances with an alarm sound when a window is opened from outside, a ‘Window Lock Device’ that prevents unauthorized entry through windows, and ‘Security Bars.’

Applications will be available from mid-July through the Single Household Support Center within the Seongdong-gu Healthy Family and Multicultural Family Support Center.

Twenty single-woman stores will have ‘Safe Bells’ installed that can immediately connect to the police in emergencies. When the bell is pressed in a dangerous situation, it connects instantly to the district’s CCTV control center, enabling the police to dispatch to the scene immediately.

A district official said, “We are making every effort to ensure the safety of single-woman households to alleviate the heightened anxiety following last year’s attempted rape case in Sillim-dong,” adding, “The district has been carrying out various projects such as operating ‘Women’s Safe Delivery Boxes,’ the escort service ‘Women’s Safe Return Scout,’ and the illegal camera crackdown ‘Safe Security Guards.’”

In addition, the district is conducting close administrative measures for women’s safe living, including enacting the Basic Ordinance for the Prevention of Violence Against Women, lending devices for checking hidden cameras, operating Women’s Safe Keeper Houses, running temporary shelters ‘Safe Houses’ for victims of violence, and creating CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) safe villages.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “Through various efforts, we were designated as a Women-Friendly City by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family in 2015 and are preparing for re-designation in 2021,” adding, “We will continue to enhance our status as a Women-Friendly City by promoting village projects and life-close safety policies that ensure women’s safety according to local characteristics.”
