Daejeon City Conducts Inspections of Rental Car Industry to Prevent Illegal Rentals to Minors

[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City is set to conduct inspections targeting the local rental car industry. In response to the increasing number of accidents involving minors using rental cars, the city plans to verify the legal guardian consent requirement for users under 18 years old and check the implementation of driver qualification and identity verification using the ‘Driver’s License Information Automatic Verification System.’

The city announced on the 14th that from the 15th to the 30th, in cooperation with the Rental Car Business Association, it will inspect the overall operational status of 47 local car rental businesses, focusing on registration standards and compliance with laws and regulations.

The inspection targets include compliance with rental car facility registration standards, subscription to comprehensive and liability insurance, implementation of business plan changes, and whether business-use vehicles exceed the age limit to ensure renter safety.

The city will also examine issues such as refusal to refund reservation fees and excessive repair charges, which have frequently caused complaints and disputes with users recently.

Additionally, the city plans to recommend that both parties photograph any vehicle damage at the pick-up location to foster a proper rental car usage culture within the region.

Park In-gyu, head of the Transportation and Parking Division, stated, “To prevent rental car accidents, we will prohibit rentals to unqualified drivers and conduct administrative guidance to prevent disputes between businesses and consumers. In particular, intentional violations of laws detected during inspections will be subject to administrative sanctions.”
