[Asia Economy Reporter Han Seung-gon] North Korea is escalating its criticism of South Korea over the distribution of anti-North leaflets. On the 13th, Oh Su-bong, the head chef of Okryu-gwan who prepared the dinner with North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un during President Moon Jae-in's visit to Pyongyang in 2018, criticized the South Korean government, saying, "When they came to Pyongyang and ate the famous Okryu-gwan noodles, they acted as if they were going to do something big, but after returning, they have done absolutely nothing."
On the same day, through North Korea's external propaganda media 'Chosun Today,' Chef Oh harshly condemned, saying, "I feel like immediately catching all those dirty mutt gangs (defector groups) and those who have turned their backs on us by condoning their reckless acts and putting them on our kitchen grill."
President Moon visited Pyongyang on September 19, 2018, and had lunch with Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un and his wife at Okryu-gwan. The leaders of the three ruling and opposition parties and business leaders who accompanied him as special envoys also enjoyed the dinner at Okryu-gwan.
At that time, Kim Jong-un said, "I brought Pyongyang cold noodles all the way from Pyongyang," and added, "I hope President Moon enjoys them comfortably and deliciously." The image of the two Koreas' leaders sitting side by side eating Pyongyang cold noodles attracted great attention both domestically and internationally.
The British daily The Guardian reported, "The symbol of peace has changed from the dove to Pyongyang cold noodles," and BBC broadcasted posts on social media related to Pyongyang cold noodles and scenes of Seoul citizens lining up to taste them, reporting, "The inter-Korean summit created a cold noodle craze."
American CNN also introduced Okryu-gwan cold noodles, saying, "Let's learn about 'noodle diplomacy.'"
Meanwhile, the Workers' Party organ Rodong Sinmun, in a commentary titled "The Ruthless Retribution Punishing the Provokers," said, "Large-scale joint military exercises were a serious threat, but even more dangerous were the slanderous acts against the supreme dignity."
The newspaper stated that the distribution of anti-North leaflets has brought the situation on the Korean Peninsula to the brink of war, saying, "This provocative madness is the most vicious challenge and declaration of war against us and can never be forgiven."
