[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Gwak Sang-do, a member of the Future United Party and chairman of the Task Force (TF) for investigating the victims of comfort women grandmothers, has insisted that the cause of death of the late Son Young-mi, director of the Justice Memory Foundation's Mapo Shelter, must be accurately clarified.

On the 11th, Rep. Gwak held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Office and stated, "There are findings that require investigation regarding Director Son's death."

Based on the response received from the Northern Gyeonggi Police Agency, he said, "It is unclear how she died solely by her own will."

Rep. Gwak raised suspicions, saying, "The prosecution conducted a search and seizure of the Mapo Shelter but reportedly never investigated or summoned the deceased. Ten days after the search and seizure, a post appeared stating that condolence money for the late grandmother Lee Soon-deok was received in Director Son's personal account. Additionally, a comment on the article about Director Son's death, allegedly from a family member of a comfort woman grandmother, claimed that 'the director withdrew a large sum of money from the grandmother's bank account and transferred it to another account.'"

Rep. Gwak questioned, "The police have concluded that Director Son took her own life, but I doubt whether they are conducting a proper investigation. It should be clarified who the people captured on CCTV around the estimated time of death are and whether they have been investigated."

However, in response to a reporter's question asking if he was raising suspicions of homicide, he said, "That's not the case; I am saying that the exact cause of death must be clearly determined."

When asked about the response if the case is closed as a suicide, Rep. Gwak replied, "We need to think about what methods we can use. Since the political sphere has never discussed this, in a way, it could be considered a suspicious death under the Moon administration."
